Covenant

Pastor Daniel’s Sermon on 7/4/2024.

God is a covenant keeping God and for God to have anything to do with you, you must covenant with Him. God created the earth by covenant. Anything God created is to give Him the glory and honor He deserves. Our memory verse today is taken from James 4:7,”submit yourselves unto the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee”. 

The bible makes us know that we cannot do anything without God. Humans are like ant before God, roaming about aimlessly until God gives directions. We as humans are not on our own but created to give God the glory and honor. You resist the devil in every area. You resist the thoughts he brings to you. He says, curse someone, kill, commit suicide, don’t make good use of your life; reject them all. 

What is covenant? A covenant is an agreement between God and man. In every word that Jesus spoke, He tells us the way to come back to God. For every agreement or covenant you are getting into, there is what is called proviso. The proviso is what defines the terms of the agreement. When Jesus came to this earth, all he did was to make a covenant with us. A lawyer came to ask Jesus, what is the greatest commandment? And Jesus said to him, thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy mind, with all thy soul and everything you have. Then he said to him, you shall love thy neighbor as yourself. 

Many don’t understand why they go to church or have to serve God. The reason is that you love God with all your heart, mind and soul. This is the proviso. Some people enter into foolish covenant while some others get into a wise covenant. Any covenant that does not benefit God is a foolish covenant. Malachi 2:1-4,”and now o ye priests the commandment is for you. If you will not hear and if you will not lay it to heart to give glory unto my name says the Lord of host. I will even send a curse upon you and curse your blessing, ye I have curse them already because you do not lay it to heart. Behold I will corrupt your seed and spray dung upon your faces even the dung of your son and one shall take it away with it. And you shall know I have set these commandment before you. That my covenant shall you live by says the Lord of Host “.

There are so many wise covenant in the bible. There was a harlot called Rahab. And she found favor in God’s sight. Joshua 2:1-19. She saved the lives of the spies Joshua sent to spy the land of Jericho. But before she let them go. She made them to promise to spare her and her father’s house. This was a wise agreement. 

On the other hand, here is an example of a foolish covenant. Genesis 25:29-34 tells of how Esau sold his birthright over a plate of portage. Bible says thus, Esau despised his birthright. Many have entered into foolish covenant spiritually and physically especially those practicing withcraft, they have sold their family into the hands of the devil. Wherever you are I am calling you to get out of foolish covenants. Get out of Egypt, Babylon. Come to Jerusalem, the City of God. Covenant with God will give you blessings and life for evermore. That’s why Jesus said, “ I have come to give you life and give it to you more abundantly but Satan has come to steal, kill and destroy”. Jesus said, come unto me all ye that are weary and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. You will have peace, happiness, long life and prosperity. You will reign with the Lord forever and ever, in Jesus name.
